"Kansas City is in a state of crisis," said Dr. Andrew Schlachter, of Saint Luke's pulmonologist and critical care physician. Saint Luke's East Hospital in Eastern Jackson County has seen a 233% increase in COVID-19 patients in the last month with 80% of patients in the ICU not being vaccinated. 

The ICU is at capacity with the majority of critical patients hospitalized by the virus.

"What's different now is that again, we were seeing younger patients, sicker patients, patients who were baseline healthy before getting coronavirus," he said.
