Social media was abuzz Monday with 'the slap heard round the world'. Will Smith slapped Chris Rock during his Oscars presentation because of a joke Rock told about his wife, actress Jada Pinkett Smith's bald head.

The joke touched a nerve, but it's also raising awareness about alopecia. Jada Pinkett Smith has spoken publicly about her diagnosis of alopecia, which causes hair loss. Scientists say as much as half of black women have some form of hair loss.

KMBC talked to Dr. Meggan Newland with Saint Luke's Dermatology Specialists about the hair condition dermatologists see often.
